Nice!

Did you do a restoration, or is it original?

Haven't done restoration, just major upkeep. It's mostly original but a previous owner did a lot of things to it in the 80s. So maintaining it has been a bit of forensics and changing things back to original when I can. Me and my dad put in a rebuilt 40-horse long block about 6 years ago. We swapped out the 36hp that probably came from a '59 or '60.

Forensic refurbishing is a thing.

My mindset on vehicle repair today is much different than what it was in 1979. No one would chop and drop an oval window today. Don't judge us for what we did when there were dozens of swing arm bugs in every boneyard for the picking.

Oh I don't judge at all. I have zero qualms about what the previous owners did. They DID choose to keep it close to original but nobody thought about swapping motors or repainting back then.

I bought it right after I got out of college. I was looking for something to throw some mags on and beef up the engine myself. Maybe turn it into a Baja Bug. This was back in the pre-internet day when you read a few lines in a classified ad and had no idea what the car looked like until you showed up.

When me and my dad pulled into the guys driveway and first saw it, we fell in love and I changed all my plans. And my dad fully approved because he was a Porsche guy in the '60s. Sometime you just stumble on something you're not looking for and it changes what you want.
