Aloha, Islanders!

I gave my introductions maybe a year ago, but I'm afraid I dropped off the Earth for personal reasons and now I'm back.

I don't suppose, in my absence, a Moai chapter formed up in my part of the country, eh?

Just a reintroduction. My name's Matt, but Jack is fine. I'm a mason (love fraternities!) and a tikiphile, and am working on my basement tiki paradise. I'm also trying to convince my wife to go to Tiki Oasis this year, but she's a tough nut to crack.

Mahalo!

Tiki Jack

& Welcome back!

We've got a few FOM friends up that way - do you happen to know Steve & Tammy Wahlin or Dan Schlissel? Steve & Tammy join us every year at Ohana Luau at the Lake (Oh, except last year when baby Gus was born Ohana weekend!!). & Dan joined us at Ohana Luau by the Sea a couple years back as well.

Pull up a barstool & tell us a bit about yourself

Right this moment it's an empty space in my basement with dark brown walls and waiting for flooring. I used to have it sort of hodge podged, but never as a usable bar, but now that we're having our basement redone, I get to do it up right! I'll post pictures as I progress.

I don't, but I'd be happy to if anyone wants to help with introductions. I've got a lodge brother who's also into tiki culture, and might have a lead on another, but I'm not sure that there's really any kind of active group here. I think it'd be pretty cool to get one going.

I've been a tiki fan ever since I was a teen. That's what I get for growing up on Gilligan's Island, I guess. I've always loved the culture and think of it as a truly great type of Americana.

I have other interests too. Like I said, I'm a mason, and should be (crosses fingers) running the lodge next year, so I'm pretty good with fraternal things. I've never been a shriner though, despite my love of fezzes. I do intend to wear a Fez-O-Rama Mystic Eye fez when I'm running the lodge though.

I also build and play cigar box guitars, and I'm trying to bring back the cocktail party. With four kids all under ten at my house though, that may be some time yet. But I'm going to be working on the bar sooner rather than later, finally!

My sister did her undergrad at University of Minnesota. I love Minneapolis. However, it was quite a while ago. Psycho Suzi's is one of the last midwest tiki bars I haven't visited. I need to take a road trip up there and hit it.

So here's a question. I was active for a few months, but then stepped aside, and now I'm back a year and a half later. Do I need to start my five month term over again?

Always good to know someone who can build things out of brick, stone & mortar.

Welcome back, Jack!

I'm sure others will chime in re. trials, but it's always a good idea to keep active on the forum and maybe even make it out to a FOM event someday. It helps the cause when Fellows see that are a real guy and not some midwestern Max Headroom.

Sounds like you are SW in Lodge - me too, though I've done my time and can't wait to get out. Best of luck with your travels!

My wife has spurned all attempts to take our vacation to Tiki Oasis, assuming anyone here was going there, but for the most part travel just isn't happening. Four kids, no money. So It'd be nice to get something started up here. We've got the bars, we've probably got the people.

There isn't a Port of the Initiate facebook group or anything, is there?

Also, yes! Senior Warden. Braden Lodge No. 168.

I was surprised at Psyco-Suzi's that more people weren't paying attention to the house exotica band.
Tiki travel with a family is a challenge. We have been forced to leave children out on the street because of strict 21 and over rules.

Sent from somewhere exotic

Nah - outside of meatspace, this right here is the port of entry. So, great news: you're in the right place! Pick out a hammock and stay a while.

Dual fraternal greetings from Queequeg Chapter in New England, and from Manchester Lodge #73 in CT. :fez:

True. But for the Facebook aficionado these are certainly things to be following also.

My boyfriend is also a mason from the St-Lawrence-Zetland lodge in Montreal :) You'd have at least one Brother here!

and welcome back!
