I can't find the thread at the moment, but I know there's one somewhere where we talk about how awesome trav-l bars are. In that thread, Ahu mentions the idea of turning a guitar case into a trav-l bar. That got me thinking about making my own ultimate trav-l bar. It's still a work in progress, but it's come a long way from this:

to this:

That's 11 bottles (2 big boys), plus tupperware for sliced limes, lemons, and cherries, and plenty of room for other tools.

I've got plans for a dvd player and speakers, and a towel bar.

Here's what I've done to the outside:

LuRu painted the hula girls (I suppose that's cheating Ahu). They match the fabric inside the case. The other stuff is stickers and ephemera that I added with modge podge.

I'll add more on the construction if there's interest.

So what other trav-l bar constructions or revamps are out there?

Would an Airstream trailer count as a Trav-L Bar?

It might, but that would deserve it's own thread. I'm sure lots of us would love to hear about and see it.

Found it: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=5829

Here's one LuRu painted and donated to the silent auction at the last Hot Rod Hula Hop

She did another one for Ohana, but we forgot to take pictures.

I know Tiki J has one she built from scratch. Care to share here in the port?

Ok, ok we need some rules here.

You must be able go carry your travel bar unassisted?

And no tequila.

Well, if you can start out with luggage that wasn't intended to be a Travel-Bar in the first place, that opens up a whole different competition.

Speaking of Army issue footlockers...

Wheels are a plus:

I gotta add some ephemera to the back.

I had this case at Ohana, but even with the hula girl lights it was a little hard to see in our dark room crawl room.

There could be different divisions:
Refurbishing - taking a vintage travel bar and tricking it out
Repurposing - taking some other type of case (luggage, footlocker, guitar case, accordion etc.) and turning it into a travel bar
Creating - making the whole thing from scratch

I like the idea of divisions

This sounds fun and the divisions would level the playing field a bit.

So anything needing a trailer hitch to move it is out?

The Trav-L bar winter project contest rules would be something like:
1. Less than 35 pounds fully stocked
2. Minimum service for 4? 2? 1?
3. Capable of creating at least 1? 2? 4? 5? different drinks
4. Self powered by conventional/non-conventional means?
5. Contain no tequila nor any spirit containing an insect, reptile or bacon. (still allows the goat to participate)

Judged on the ability to create an exotic ambiance in a modern beige hotel type room.

What are the dates for the competition?
Specifications posted with photos?
Does the case have to be soft or hard?
Inflatable up or down?
