Thanks Chip! Were they purely decorative? or did they have a function? It sort of reminds me of the thing sommeliers wear.

The military used them to distinquish between regimental leaders and field personnel. They were also key regalia for dress uniforms. Simplified versions of these military gorgets were popular trade items distributed to Native American tribes from the earliest days of contact to around the 1850s.

FYI - The gorget evolved from the full metal breast plates that officers wore in battle which were derived from the full armor of a knight.
