I just got a comment on one of my older posts about Mai Tais, asking if I knew what the recipe was for Mai Tais at the Kahiki in Columbus.

I haven't got the foggiest. Anyone out there know how they made their Mai Tais out on the East Side?

Well thankfully their Navy Grog kicked ass.

I guess fresh limes were not as easy to snag in those days (in the upper Midwest) as they are today, eh?

But what else did he use besides the limeade?

Was it a grenadine, pineapple mess, or was it a cheap ingredient attempt at a good one?

For the record, here's the post from 2009 whose comment section has suddenly come alive again and prompted this inquiry.
http://www.killingtime.com/Pegu/2009/02/25/mai-tai-throwdown/

It's a comparison of Trader Vic's Mai Tai, versus Don's.

In an attempt to troll you all, I'll just add: Vic Rules, Don Drools.

IIRC, the Kahiki Mai Tai had a pinkish hue to it. Any other Columbusites remember that?

I suspect Creme de Almonde. Also, I'd wager there was no Orgeat.

I have the recipe somewhere, aside from frozen limeaide, basic same ingrediants, orange caracau, orgeat, i think meyers dark jamaican, and a middle of the road light rum

The folks at the Tropical Bistro claimed to be using the Kahiki receipts for their drinks. Their Mai Tai was close. The “Kroger Lime Aid” along with ‘well’ rum sounds about right.
