The FOM Kon-Tiki chapter is planning a group outing for the first quarter of 2016 to see "The Art of the Brick" exhibit at the Cincinnati Museum Center. The exhibit, which runs through May 1, features more than 100 works of art made entirely of Lego bricks.

Quote:
The Art of the Brick presents LEGO® bricks in a whole new light, demonstrating the potential of creativity and the power of imagination. The Art of the Brick features over 100 works of art by contemporary artist Nathan Sawaya. But rather than paint and canvas, these masterpieces are made entirely of LEGO bricks. Millions and millions of little LEGO bricks.

The Art of the Brick is the first major museum exhibition to use LEGO bricks as the sole art medium. Sawaya has transformed them into tremendous and thought-provoking sculptures. Walk through art history, from classic works like the Mona Lisa, Starry Night, The Scream and American Gothic to historic works like the Sphinx, the Venus de Milo and the Thinker.

It’s also a journey into Sawaya’s mind as you explore some of his original works, including a series of life-size human figures, a 20-foot-long T-Rex skeleton and a special Cincinnati-themed piece created for the Cincinnati debut.

The Art of the Brick also features an exclusive interactive component, Brickopolis, covering 5,000 square feet. Unleash your mind and imagination as you use tubs of LEGO bricks to build unique creations. Design cars and race them down ramps, work with friends to build megastructures and even create your own masterpiece to put on display!

Obviously, the big draw for the FOM is the full-size Moai made from 75,450 Legos.

Image

Does this scream chapter photo opportunity or what?

We are just now in the planning stages for the outing. The exhibit runs through April, so we can wait until the weather starts warming up to avoid driving on snowy southern Ohio roads during the winter months.

Cincinnati is easy driving distance from both Columbus and Indianapolis, so we'd like to invite the Kahiki and PukaPuka chapters to join us, along with any Tungane, Initiates or tourists who'd like to take part. Admission is $19.50 for adults and $12.50 for kids.

Depending on the level of interest, we can make it a one-day or weekend outing. Other possible stops might include the American Sign Museum, home of the famed Kona Lanes bowling sign, among countless others.

Image

There also are some cool bars we can check out, along with the Party Source across the river in Bellevue, Kentucky, which has a great selection of rums.

Please let us know if you're interested in attending. We'll start putting together our plan after the holidays, so stay tuned for updates!

The sign museum moved since we were there last.
It is closer to the Museum Center in Camp Washington (which is the exit off 75 to go to Bogart's and UC)

Mark your calendars! Saturday, April 16 is the date for the Cincinnati "Lego Moai" meet 'n' greet hosted by the FOM Kon-Tiki chapter.

As noted above, we'll be visiting the Cincinnati Museum Center to see "The Art of the Brick." The exhibit features more than 100 works of art made entirely of Lego bricks, including a Moai made from 75,450 Legos!

We also will visit the American Sign Museum, home of the famed Kona Lanes bowling sign, among countless others.

In addition, we plan to tour New Riff Distilling, a craft distillery on the Party Source campus in Newport, Ky. The Party Source has a huge selection of rums, so we'll want to stop there, as well.

We're looking into bar possibilities for the evening -- although we could just stay and drink at the craft beer bar at Party Source. There are several nearby hotels and we are checking about group rates for Saturday night.

Please post below if you are interested in attending, and let us know how many are in your party so we can get a headcount for the tours. Also, please indicate if you're looking to make it a weekend and stay overnight.

We'll post more info on a schedule and museum ticket prices as it comes together.

Be there. Aloha!

So far, those attending from the Kon-Tiki chapter are:

Hep and Swizzle
mr_ and mrs_melvis
'Umi'umi (and maybe Wren)
Hi Fi Hijinx
Hawgness and Angie

Any interested parties from the Puku Puka or Kahiki chapters, or among the nearby Tungane, Tourists or visitors in the Port? The meet 'n' greet is open to one and all!

We're working on getting a group rate at a hotel across the street from the Party Source. We're also looking into group discounts at the museums, so we'll need to get a head count here at some point.

Please let us know if you plan to join the fun! :fez:

I can't vouch for everyone, but I think I can come to it. I need to check on a couple things to make sure timing is right, but this will be great!

Aloha! We're just about three weeks away from the Kon-Tiki chapter's meet 'n' greet on April 16 in Cincinnati, and the schedule is falling into place.

The plan is a day-long adventure with multiple stops. That way you can join us for all or just part of the festivities, depending on what appeals to you. You'll be able to spot us at any of the stops by our aloha shirts and other tiki apparel!

We'll start off at 11:30 am with lunch at Camp Washington Chili, founded in 1940 and named one of "The 20 Most Iconic Food Destinations Across America." They are located at 3005 Colerain Ave. in Cincinnati.

Image

Around 1 pm, we will head to the Cincinnati Museum Center to see "The Art of the Brick." The exhibit features more than 100 works of art made entirely of Lego bricks, including a Moai made from 75,450 Legos!

The Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal, an historic Art Deco train station, is at 1301 Western Ave. in Cincinnati.

Image

There are timed entrances for the Lego exhibit, so we'll want to try to all go in together for FOM and friends group photos. Admission is $19.50 for adults and $12.50 for kids. Please feel free to bring the family!

From there we will head across the river to the Party Source and New Riff Distilling, a craft Kentucky bourbon distillery on the Party Source campus at 95 Riviera Drive in Bellevue, KY.

Image

We hope to take a tour of New Riff at 4 pm. The tour and tasting is free, but we need to make a reservation, so please let us know asap if you plan to attend.

From there, we will head into the Party Source to shop their huge selection of fine rums, bourbons and beer! The Party Source also has a craft beer bar, so we'll also hang out and enjoy some tasty beverages!

If anyone is still hungry, we can head down the street to the Hofbrauhaus Newport, an authentic German-style beer hall with good food and beers by the liter or half-liter. Otherwise, we'll call it a day and head on down the road.

Image

(FYI, we opted not to do the American Sign Museum this time around due to the additional cost and time constraints.)

Please let us know if you plan to join us for a fun day of FOM fellowship. We're looking forward to having you along!

We are booked for the New Riff Distilling tour at 6 pm Saturday. Our reservation is for 12 people. They take up to 15, so there are still three open slots. Please let me know asap if you want to join our group.

Here is the scoop, for those who have RSVP'd for the tour...

Quote:
A large portion of the tour takes place over a grated floor, please wear flat soled closed toe shoes, heels will prohibit you from seeing a portion of the tour. There are stairs we will climb during our tour and a bit of walking. Tours will last approximately 1 hour. Most of the tour is not climate controlled and can at times be quite warm. If any of this poses a challenge to you please let us know in advance. We are an operating facility and much of the equipment may be very hot, please don't touch any of the equipment. There may be portions where a detour is necessary due to the noise levels or the production team working to make some great whiskey!

Our tours will begin promptly at the scheduled time, please be ready to go.

Thanks for choosing to visit us, we are striving to give you a great tour experience.

Oh, and the tour ends with a complementary tasting! :drunk:

We had a great time Saturday in Cincy. Mahalo to everyone who joined us!

We hit the iconic Camp Washington Chili parlor, the "Art of the Brick" Lego art exhibit and the New Riff Bourbon distillery.

Here are a few highlights. Check out the full album on the Kon-Tiki chapter's FB page.
