Just wanted to greet you all for my first post (gotta get that first post done somehow). Kinda new to tiki, but you seem like people I could learn from and have fun doing it. Thanks for letting me lurk around the forum.

I live in Old Fourth Ward. Conveniently, between SOS and Trader Vic's. :D

Tiki has been creeping up on me for a while now. One day, you're at your first real tiki bar. Then you look up wondering how to attach straw matting to the basement walls...

That you said "Real" tiki bar means you know and recognize the difference so... thats a good sign
I have visited at least four so-called "Tiki Bars" in the last month that are little more than a shack near the beach serving some syrupy rum based swill.

Hope you get a chance to meet up with some of our Tongariki Chapter Fellows sometime at SOS or TV's.

I'm originally from Birmingham... Roll Tide/War Eagle ! (don't really care...) have not followed football since "Bear" Bryant" left us... that dates me a bit.

Are you Georgia born and raised?
What other interests aside from Tiki do you have?

Well, I’m assuming it’s a real tiki bar. Like a lot of good stories, my tiki story started in New Orleans (specifically Latitude 29). I was in need of air conditioning and a cool drink (it’s NOLA). So, I guess we can blame Beachbum Berry.

I was raised in Georgia. A little broken-hearted about my beloved Dawgs losing the national championship.

I’ve got a few different interests. For instance, next weekend is poker, steaks, and skeet shooting with old friends from college.

I look forward to meeting the folks from Tongariki soon!

Welcome! Latitude 29 is not a bad place to start:) I always look forward to spending as much time as I can at Trader Vic's during Dragon Con. DC has been getting more and more Tiki offerings over the last couple of years.

I don't mind those bars if they are on an actual beach with a view. I can always order a beer!

Right now, it’s a toss up between a mai tai and a 151 swizzle. I’m going to try my hand at making a jet pilot soon, so I’ll let you know how it goes.

I love any waterfront bar or restaurant with a view. I am lucky to live near the Emeryville Trader Vic's, one of only two tiki bars I know with a coolaceous waterfront location. Psycho Suzi's doesn't have as great a view, but is on a rather coolaceous river. Of course the world's best tiki-bar-that-is-not-a-"tiki"-bar-because-it-is-in-Hawaii-and-comes-by-its-Polynesian-vibe-naturally (Mama's Fish House) also has the world's best view.

Just realized that I commented on tiki bars with waterfront views, and even included Hawaii, without thinking of La Mariana. Totally my bad.

We've still got several gallons of peanut oil left over from deep frying a turkey for Christmas, so I don't see why there couldn't be fried chicken!

Completely forgot about that. Shouldn't have. I've never been there but most of my friends have.

Aloha, Snarlybeast.

What manner of beast inspired your screen name?

Also, watch around the boards for Trader Vic's seminars or events/gatherings, etc. of the Tongariki.
They are a WAY fun group of delightful, welcoming folks!

The inspiration for Snarlybeast was a chocolate lab who liked to pretend she was a vicious beast during tug of war. In reality, she was a danger only to biscuits.
