I live in Los Angeles, no local chapter but maybe something could be arranged.

My name is Vince, my wife is Karen and we've been into things tiki since we first went to Tiki Oasis in 2005.

We've converted our dining room into Smokey's Bamboo Hideaway, named after our late canine, who loved hanging out in our backyard bamboo.

Hope to hear from you folks soon.

Aloha! Welcome to the Port! I'd love to see pictures of your Hideaway. What do you do to control the spread of your bamboo? I'm currently fighting it in my backyard.

Let me figure out how to upload pictures. I hope this works:

I foolishly planted the bamboo right in the ground. It took a pickax to cut back the overgrowth. Then I dug a trench and lined it with flagstones. That seems to work.

If I had to do it over again, I would have left the bamboo in the plastic containers and just cut out the bottoms.

Very nice! The previous owners of my home planted a few stalks of bamboo in the backyard. Now, it's a small forest. Every spring, it's bamboo shoot stomping season. It's the only way to control the spread. I think I stomped over 200 shoots this year. I told the local zoo to take as much as they want for their animals.

Welcome!

Hey, I was also at the 2005 Oasis! Maybe we met?...
hahahahahahahaha. I barely remember that it was a pirate theme. I think there was a big crazy al ship? Wait, it's coming back...Project Pimento. Martini Kings. So many, many cocktails since then.

Anybody recall, was that the year of Cherry Capri's mid mod bus tour?...To the photo archives...

Image

Why yes, yes it was. Pictured here with three other current Moai (although we didn't know there was a FOM back then -- at least I didn't)
Back row Maori Mountain Man and his bride Kekona. Front row Riptide and me.

OK -- back from memory lane. Let's talk about YOU, BambooDog!

Did you attend any other Oases (Oasises? Oasi?) Any other tiki events? What kind of dog was Smokey? Did he actually hide in the hideaway? What's the house drink?
Can you tell I had a m-a-r-g-a-r-i-t-a* for taco Tuesday? (technically the last question is still about you...)

*perhaps more than one, but how did I not know until now that word was word filtered? about seven fifths of Old Crow whiskey, indeed

We've been to most of the Tiki Oasis events since then - missed HulaBilly and International Espionage and didn't attend this year due to Covid. We did go to the first TO AZ. A different type of event and very enjoyable in its own way.

2005 - I remember Purple Orchid doing the drinks, and Sven blocking my view of the burlesque

Smokey was a black female pitbull. A fierce looking dog but actually very friendly and playful. She left us over 2 years ago, sadly. She did have a nook she dug out in our bamboo that she would hang out in. Someone dumped her in our neighborhood when she was about 8 weeks old. The person who found her went door to door to find the owner. When the finder asked my wife if she knew who owns the puppy, my wife said, "I guess she's mine now".

Here she is by her hideaway:
https://scontent-lax3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/ ... e=5FB4D172

No real house drink, but my fave is a Montego Bay - spice, fresh fruit and funky rum.

I've been using the lockdown to go through Beachbum Berry Remixed.

Aloha and welcome to the port!

What part of LA are you in? There are a few FOM out that way. A couple in the Long Beach area.

Just searches for things tiki. This showed up and I was fascinated.

Have not met anyone who introduced themselves as part of FOM, though I'm sure I have run across FOM members at various tiki events.

Is there a directory of SoCal members? Any interest in a chapter here?

Larchmont Village, though if you are not familiar with Los Angeles, I will just say Hollywood. Tiki Ti is our local hangout.

I grew up in El Toro, but if decades count I am from San Clemente. We've been out east since So Cal Edison didn't need my skill set.

howdy fellow Angeleno!

I too am interested in joining the FOM, and while there's no chapter here in LA, I can't figure out why there isnt.

Maybe theres a way to make it happen!

I'd be interested. Maybe when Covid is over we can meet at Tiki Ti.

Aloha, Vince!

I'm a newbie, too, so welcome! It's a little surprising LA doesn't have a local chapter since there's so much tiki out West, but hopefully, you'll have a chapter to join soon.

Where in LA do you live? I grew up in Monrovia.

Gah! Of allll the tiki bars I’ve been to (and I’ve been to many) Tiki Ti was so my favorite! I absolutely love a small “locals vibe” bar so much!

Then I’d say I love Frankies in LA... again... dive bar vibes are my fav!

I love all the tiki bars I’ve been to... I love the theatrics I love the kitsch...

But I love dank lil bars the most... always filled w the most INTERESTING people!

Re: bamboo--runners would punch right through plastic--I planted some a number of years ago knowing that, so I used metal flashing. Punched through that too. Bamboo is pretty butch in the ground.

Welcome Vince and aloha.

I am born and raised in Long Beach CA. When the shutdown lifts, it would be great to meet at the 'Ti. Been there on several Wednesday nights for the ringing of the bell...

Cheers

Hello Vince! Welcome. I'm from Indianapolis and have only visited LA once but luckily went to Don the Beachcombers before it closed. You've got a lot of tiki bars out there to try! Enjoy them! We have the Inferno Room here and another tiki inspired bar called Strangebird. Anyway enjoy yourself on here! Lots to talk about.

Welcome! Seems there are a few people from CA showing interest lately. Perhaps there's a new chapter in the making?
