Is Today Blue Tot Day?

Aloha!

A few weeks ago we marked Black Tot Day, when the Royal Navy ended over two centuries of tradition and stopped serving the rum ration.

Today is... well... a less remarkable day. On September 1, 1862, the United States Navy ended the spirit ration aboard American vessels by act of Congress (the spirit was often rum of course). Navy personnel were compensated $0.05 per day for this reduction in rations which probably bought a lot of drinks on the next shore leave!

The act of Congress banned all spirits on board ship but beer, wine and malt liquor stayed aboard ship until 1914 when the Navy went entirely dry.

So, while not as dramatic or historic as Black Tot Day the Moai will mark this day with a strong drink. Our Puritan forefathers are probably sorely disappointed.

Mahalo,
