Aloha, Everyone!

My name is Rich. I was surprised to discover The Fraternal Order of Moai just this morning and wasted no time in signing up to chat.

I live in Philadelphia in a home with a small wet bar that functions as a passageway between the family room and our laundry room and garage. The previous owners dumped dirty laundry in it. I turned it into a tiki bar, natch.

My love of tiki was initially inspired by childhood trips to Walt Disney World's Polynesian Resort, Jungle Cruise and Enchanted Tiki Room. Even growing up in grey and gritty Toledo, Ohio, though, there were some local attractions that gave the right kind of tiki vibe. A long-gone mini zoo and wild animal show called Jungle Larry's at our local amusement park Cedar Point always felt tiki to me despite its predominately African theming. Living in Columbus while in grad school, I visited the Kahiki. I consider myself lucky to have experienced it.

Here are some pics of the home bar. I hope you like it. Any Philly-area Moai out there?

Alohowdy!

Nice home oasis.

Maybe you can help with some confusion the Michiganders and Illinoisans have caused.

The "Toledo Strip," is that a burlesque routine that wouldn't play on Peoria because of morals ordinances?

Rams eat oats and goats eat oats but little lambs eat ivy.

The "Toledo Strip" was a pretty racy routine, indeed. It had them talking all the way from Wauseon to Ypsilanti.

Yeah, Ohio may have "won" Toledo as a result of the Ohio/Michigan War, but you can believe it is much more a Michigan city in every other respect. The economy was/is based on the auto industry; we're all Tigers fans; we drink a hell of a lot of Faygo and Vernor's. Oh, and a 'Coney Dog' is the most delicious thing on earth. Don't let the name fool you: it's pure Detroit.

Thank you all for the nice welcome! Nice to be here.

Welcome to the Port! I've always wanted to visit Philly but still haven't been there. Pittsburgh is on the list too. Anyway, enjoy FOM!
